Ceremonia a fost însă umbrită de vestea șocantă a morții legendei baschetului mondial Kobe Bryant, care și-a pierdut viața într-un accident de elicopter, împreună cu fiica sa de 13 ani Gianna, duminică, cu doar câteva ore înainte de începerea galei. Kobe a jucat pentru Los Angeles Lakers mai mult de 20 de ani.
